By Michael Maharrey

Today, the Arizona House voted 60-0 to pass a bill reforming the state’s asset forfeiture laws. The bill also takes on federal forfeiture programs by banning prosecutors from circumventing state laws by passing cases off to the feds in most situations.

Rep. Eddie Farnsworth (R-Gilbert) introduced House Bill 2477 (HB2477) on Feb. 7. The legislation would require prosecutors to establish a higher evidentiary standard for asset forfeiture. As it stands, the law only requires a preponderance of the evidence. HB2477 would raise that, requiring police and prosecutors to provide “clear and convincing evidence” the property was linked to a crime. While the proposed law would not require a criminal conviction before proceeding with asset forfeiture, it would take a step toward reforming Arizona’s forfeiture laws under that essential standard.

HB2477 would also drastically increase transparency. It would establish stringent asset forfeiture reporting requirements law enforcement agencies would have to follow. Additionally, police would have to detail how seized funds are spent.

While the reforms are modest in comparison with those under consideration in many states, law enforcement has aggressively lobbied against the bill. Activists have obtained letters sent to representatives from at least three police departments opposing the bill. (click here to read the documents or see them below this report)

Despite the opposition, the Arizona House passed it by a 60-0 vote today.

ADDRESSES FEDERAL PROGRAMS

HB2477 also close a loophole that allows prosecutors to bypass more stringent state asset forfeiture laws by passing cases off to the federal government under its Equitable Sharing forfeiture program.

The seizing agency or the attorney for the state may not enter into any agreement to transfer or refer seized property to a federal agency either directly, indirectly, by adoption, through an intergovernmental joint task force or by any other means for the purpose of forfeiture unless the seized property includes more than one hundred thousand dollars in United States currency.  If the seized property includes more than one hundred thousand dollars in United States currency The seizing agency may, but is not required to, transfer or refer the seized property to a federal agency for forfeiture pursuant to federal law.  This subsection does not restrict a seizing agency from collaborating with a federal agency to seize contraband or property that the seizing agency has probable cause to believe is property that is subject to forfeiture through an intergovernmental joint task force.

The inclusion of provisions barring state and local law enforcement agencies from passing off cases to the feds is particularly important. In several states with strict asset forfeiture laws, prosecutors have done just that. By placing the case under federal jurisdiction, law enforcement can bypass the need for a conviction under state law and collect up to 80 percent of the proceeds from forfeited assets via the federal Equitable Sharing Program.

For example, California previously had some of the strongest state-level restrictions on civil asset forfeiture in the country, but law enforcement would often bypass the state restrictions by partnering with a federal asset forfeiture program known as “equitable sharing.” Under these arrangements, state officials would simply hand over forfeiture prosecutions to the federal government and then receive up to 80 percent of the proceeds—even when state law banned or limited the practice. According to a report by the Institute for Justice, Policing for Profit, California ranked dead last of all states in the country between 2000 and 2013 as the worst offender. During the 2016 legislative session, the state closed the loophole.

As the Tenth Amendment Center previously reported the federal government inserted itself into the asset forfeiture debate in California. The feds clearly want the policy to continue.

Why?

We can only guess. But perhaps the feds recognize paying state and local police agencies directly in cash for handling their enforcement would reveal their weakness. After all, the federal government would find it nearly impossible to prosecute its unconstitutional “War on Drugs” without state and local assistance. Asset forfeiture “equitable sharing” provides a pipeline the feds use to incentivize state and local police to serve as de facto arms of the federal government by funneling billions of dollars into their budgets.

NEXT

HB2477 now moves to the Senate for further consideration.

Smart Dust The Future of Involuntary Treatment of the Public http://www.altheadlines.com/smart-dust-the-future-of-involuntary-treatment-of-the-public-13270646/ Thu, 23 Feb 2017 17:00:24 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/smart-dust-the-future-of-involuntary-treatment-of-the-public-13270646/ Pedro Aquila

Smart DustSmart dust is a name given to extremely small computing particles, RFID chips, or other very small technologies.

A popular article from Extreme Tech describes it in the headline: “Smart dust: A complete computer that’s smaller than a grain of sand.” An article from War is Boring is titled “Future Military Sensors Could Be Tiny Specks of ‘Smart Dust’ New technologies allow for extremely small—and ubiquitous—military sensors.” A paper from University of California, San Diego describes smart dust:

“The term “smart dust” originally referred to miniature wireless semiconductor devices made using fabrication techniques derived from the microelectronics industry. These devices incorporate sensing, computing and communications in a centimetre-sized package.”

It is promoted as an eventuality, that smart dust will cover streets and buildings to identify people, that people will have smart dust in their bodies, and other things in mainstream television and media. They paint a utopian, blissful picture of it.

However, the history of entities involved in creating smart dust show a different perspective. The same entities who create destructive technology (drones, surveillance technology, technology for warfare) are involved with its creation: military industrial complex players, from the RAND Corporation to Hitachi, to DARPA and their collaborators in academia.

As with all technology, the people who wield it determine whether it’s used for the benefit of, or against the common people.

The earliest mentions of “smart dust” come from the RAND CorporationAccording to Wikipedia:

“The concepts for Smart Dust emerged from a workshop at RAND in 1992 and a series of DARPA ISAT studies in the mid-1990s due to the potential military applications of the technology.  The work was strongly influenced by work at UCLA and the University of Michigan during that period.”

The Rand Corporation has been involved in morally reprehensible warfare, think tank activity and strategy in particular, for several decades. They were involved in nuclear war strategy, disrespecting the lives of everyone on the planet in scenarios where nuclear bombs would be detonated to retaliate against Russia at the expense of all life on Earth.

Such apocalyptic scenarios are explored in many RAND publications, and in 2016, they examined possibilities of war with China. RAND has published several papers about spraying the skies, involuntarily treating whole populations with chemicals to geoengineer the weather. One is titled “Governing Geoengineering Research: A Political and Technical Vulnerability Analysis of Potential Near-Term Options.”

With the recent announcement that the US government is looking into geoengineering research, it looks like an overt, involuntary treatment of the American people with geoengineering material is coming soon. They act as if they aren’t already spraying us.

RAND is likely to be involved with complex science used for control over populations, as implied in a publication of theirs. It reads,

“Beyond the agricultural and industrial revolutions of the past, a global technology revolution is currently changing the world. This book discusses the broad, multidisciplinary, and synergistic trends in this revolution, including genomics, cloning, biomedical engineering, smart materials, agile manufacturing, nanofabricated computation devices, and integrated microsystems.”

A central, historical player in Japan’s military industrial complex, Hitachi developed some of the smallest smart dust particles ever disclosed to the public, a full 15 years ago with the announcement of the 0.4mm x 0.4mm external antenna µ-Chip. As far back as 2001, “smart dust” was this small. It is depicted in this popular meme still circulating on social media.

Considering how far back the technology goes, how small is the smallest “smart dust” today? Could it be small enough to perform functions inside the human body, or be involuntarily sprayed on us without us realizing it?

Considering what we don’t know about the inner workings of DARPA, the institutes of technology so influential to modern warfare, and other historically dangerous institutions, what technology similar to smart dust could they be pioneering or even experimenting on us with?

Understanding the history of recent human experimentation is necessary to understand the probability of involuntary treatment with smart dust.

A paper from the University of California, San Diego is titled “Smart dust: self-assembling, self-orienting photonic crystals of porous Si.” It is about “micrometer-sized one-dimensional photonic crystals of porous Si that spontaneously assemble, orient, and sense their local environment.”

A June 2016 Singularity Hub article is titled “Smart Dust Is Coming: New Camera Is the Size of a Grain of Salt.” The article reads:

“In a new University of Stuttgart paper published in Nature Photonics, scientists describe tiny 3D printed lenses and show how they can take super sharp images. Each lens is 120 millionths of a meter in diameter—roughly the size of a grain of table salt—and because they’re 3D printed in one piece, complexity is no barrier. Any lens configuration that can be designed on a computer can be printed and used.”

“The lenses—which included single, double, and triple optical elements—were printed on strands of optical fiber and standard digital sensors like those used in cameras. The researchers believe future applications include less invasive endoscopic medical imaging of the body—even injection into the brain—and nearly invisible camera sensors on miniature drones or robots.

“This will lead to a plethora of novel devices with tremendous impact on biotechnology, medical engineering, and safety/security monitoring,” they wrote.”

Injecting smart dust into a person’s brain for endoscopic medical imaging is “less” invasive?

Using bacteria encapsulated in electrospun nanofibers to treat water and enrich soil for crops is being discussed as well, in powerful academic institutions such as Israel Institute of Technology. Geoengineering researchers suspect that the tiny, metallic looking particles found after chemtrail spraying may be a form of smart dust.

People theorize that smart dust may be sprayed on us, and that a similar technology may even be forcefully administered to take control of the human body. Some question whether GWEN towers could be used in conjunction with smart dust-type-technology.

While it’s not completely proven that people are being involuntarily treated with smart dust, if we want to anticipate the future and avoid a dystopian nightmare, we’d be wise to examine all the possibilities, because in the world today, technology that was heralded as revolutionary and life saving is often the complete opposite.

Once the general public is coaxed into accepting something as life-saving, from that point forward, people who criticize the science are ostracized. This is not science as in, the scientific method of critically testing the effects of something and searching for evidence, but it’s dogma about technology.

Vaccines are a perfect example. Once people became normalized to them, and people who questioned them were denigrated as conspiracy theorists, a threshold was crossed which makes it difficult to reach anyone with alternative info about them.

Powerful institutions and their mad scientists are trying to cross this “threshold of normalization” with geoengineering as we speak, and they will try with smart dust.

While people who observe the chemtrail spraying in the skies, have seen rain tests full of aluminum, and have seen the geoengineering patents for spraying aluminum, have been cast aside as conspiracy theorists for saying spraying is occurring, the mainstream media and mad science institutions are now openly calling for spraying the skies to “combat climate change.”

One day, the government could declare “we will now spray,” and those who say your health could be damaged by their geoengineering spray might be called crazy in a future where people are normalized to it. Those who insist other chemicals and things are being sprayed on us under the guise of overt geoengineering could be called paranoid, once the “threshold of normalization” is reached with the public.

To remain in control over what technology is administered to us, because governments are pushing harder every day to make vaccines mandatory, breathing in particles sprayed in the sky, and other health damaging things, we have to not allow public opinion to reach that threshold of willfully accepting involuntary treatment.

With the passing of California’s SB277, children attending school are now required to get a long list of vaccines. According to SB277.org:

“SB 277 eliminates a parent’s right to exempt their children from one, some, or all vaccines, a risk-laden medical procedure including death. In 2016, California parents will be forced to give their children more than 40 doses of 10 federally recommended vaccines. This open-ended vaccine mandate allows the State of California to add any additional vaccines they deem necessary at anytime. The only exemption available is a medical exemption that doctors deny to 99.99 percent of children under federal guidelines.”

A technology that can be as dangerous as smart dust, geoengineering, etc, will certainly be used against public interests by the deep state and military industrial complex. Especially so while the American public is so sedated by the mainstream narratives regarding independent investigations into the workings of the ruling elite.

MSNBC Just Admitted: Our Job Is To Control Exactly What People Think http://www.altheadlines.com/msnbc-just-admitted-our-job-is-to-control-exactly-what-people-think-13270620/ Wed, 22 Feb 2017 17:00:24 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/msnbc-just-admitted-our-job-is-to-control-exactly-what-people-think-13270620/

By Claire Bernish

MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski just erased any lingering doubts the corporate press serves almost wholly to vomit propaganda in order to control public perception, in a rather stupefying statement during an exchange with Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough about President Trump possibly “trying to undermine the media.”

“Exactly. That is exactly what I hear,” Scarborough stated. “What Yamiche said is what I hear from all the Trump supporters that I talk to who were Trump voters and are still Trump supporters. They go, ‘Yeah you guys are going crazy. He’s doing — what are you so surprised about? He is doing exactly what he said he is going to do.’”

“Well, I think that the dangerous, you know,” Brzezinski replied, “edges here are that he is trying to undermine the media and trying to make up his own facts. And it could be that while unemployment and the economy worsens, he could have undermined the messaging so much that he can actually control exactly what people think. And that, that is our job.”

Pause and consider what Brzezinski actually said — whether or not the latter sentence constituted a Freudian slip.

A corporate media presstitute — whose game of career musical chairs saw her leaving mainstream, right-wing Fox News for mainstream, left-wing MSNBC — just told the American public it’s the media’s job to “control exactly what people think.”

But censorship of the free press has been a grave concern of independent media for months, as corporate outlets scampered to deem any reporting on multiple scandals involving the DNC and candidate Hillary Clinton ‘fake news’ — or even Russian propaganda — no matter the proven validity of the information.

That soft censorship might have suited the interests of the previous political establishment’s favored narrative — and provided a comfortable impunity for mainstream press to sanctimoniously skewer independent reporting — but the lack of foresight the oppression would eventually come full circle to apply across the board is laughable.

Perhaps MSNBC and other behemoth organizations underestimated the extreme executive powers former President Obama bequeathed to Trump — as well as Trump’s leeway in implementing more.

MSNBC’s offense at the manipulation of facts and fictions rings hollow when it and other mainstream outlets evince an established pattern of the same. That’s at least fairly close to — if not exactly — the pot calling the kettle black.

However, pointing out astonishing hypocrisy in demands for soft and hard censorship could these days be a new sport, the examples happen with such frequency. Instead, both sides — the corporate press and the political establishment, including Trump — have ramped up the measures necessary to guarantee freedom of the press will decline in coming years without hypervigilance.

And hypervigilance is an absolute necessity, now that there is no room to deny the sordid and unseemly marriage of censorship and propaganda — facilitating control of the public mind — championed openly by corporate America’s loyal lapdogs: media and government.

That statement comprises the most blatant — if perhaps tacit — evidence pro-U.S. government propaganda measures passed with the 2017 NDAA have already begun.

Mass media has for decades entrenched itself surreptitiously on the side of the ruling political establishment, using the tool of feigned neutrality to manipulate the public into thinking its reports aren’t thoroughly infused with whatever the current agenda might be.

Apparently Brzezinski and her corporate press ilk finally feel the same looming threat of censorship burdening alternative and independent outlets, which have experienced as much throughout the last election cycle. What they conveniently forget, however, is Trump salivating over media control differs negligibly from calls by the same mainstream outlets during that election season not to give credence to information revealed by WikiLeaks — nor to disseminate the (accurate) reports based on those documents proffered by alternative media.

Indeed, this dissonant, hypocritical indignation over Trump’s unmistakable effort to tailor information to suit his agenda, however justified the observation is, handily demarcates a battle between the old guard of corporate media turned government mouthpiece and the new guard of an authoritarian administration testing limits of information control.

Two arms of the same arrogant censor.

Juicing on a Budget Juice Recipe http://www.altheadlines.com/juicing-on-a-budget-juice-recipe-13260668/ Mon, 13 Apr 2015 07:04:24 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/juicing-on-a-budget-juice-recipe-13260668/ juicing-on-a-budget-juice-recipe.jpg

Let's face it, juicing can get kind of expensive these days if you are not careful with your ingredient selection. The secret to juicing on a budget is to use inexpensive ingredients that yield a lot of juice. Luckily carrots are typically pretty inexpensive especially if your buy the larger bags. They also tend to store well in your refrigerator. Apples are also relatively inexpensive if your buy them on sale and yield a lot of juice.

For my greens, I can sometimes find spinach for a good deal, and almost always can get a head of red or green romaine lettuce for a good price. To help stretch you juice, a little bit of water can go away in being able to use less ingredients but still feel like you are getting your money’s worth. The water will also help reduce the calories if you are juicing for weight loss.

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 medium carrots
  • 1 apple
  • 2 large handfuls of spinach or lettuce
  • 4 ounces of spring water

Directions:

Wash and process the ingredients as you typically would and for what works best in your particular juicer.  Add the leafy greens through first followed by the more water dense carrots and apple. Add the water to help stretch the recipe, adjusting accordingly to taste.

53 Inspiring Self-Esteem and Self-Love Quotes http://www.altheadlines.com/53-inspiring-self-esteem-and-self-love-quotes-13260647/ Sat, 11 Apr 2015 07:04:47 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/53-inspiring-self-esteem-and-self-love-quotes-13260647/ Her Flying Red Shoes (Explored) (7124561035) Henrik Edberg, The Positivity Blog

Some things may be equally essential but nothing is more important than a healthy sense of self-esteem and loving yourself.

Why?

In my experience, three of the most important reasons are:

  • Life becomes simpler and lighter. When you love yourself more then things simply become lighter and easier. You won’t make as many mountains out of molehills (or out of plain air) as you used to. Or beat yourself up or drag yourself down over mistakes or temporary setbacks.
  • You’ll have more inner stability and self-sabotage less. When your opinion of yourself goes up then you’ll stop trying to get so much validation and attention from other people. You become less needy and find an inner stability even when your world might be negative or uncertain at times.

The increasing self-esteem and self-love also makes you feel more deserving of good things in life and so you’ll self-sabotage less and go after what you deep down want with more motivation and focus than ever before.
  • You’ll be happier. The main reason why value my self-esteem so highly, why I write about this topic so often and have created a whole 12-week course around it is simply because it has made my own life so much happier and more fun.

But instead of sharing my own thoughts and experiences like I usually do I’d like to take a different approach today.

I’d like to share 53 of the most inspiring, thought provoking and uplifting thoughts from the past 2400 years on getting to know yourself, raising your self-esteem and finding a self-love.

  1. “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection” – Buddha
  2. “Until you value yourself, you won’t value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it. ” – M. Scott Peck
  3. “A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.” – Mark Twain
  4. “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.” – Harvey Fierstein
  5. “Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.” – Lucille Ball
  6. “Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
  7. “If only you could sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.” – Fred Rogers
  8. “Low self-esteem is like driving through life with your hand-break on.” – Maxwell Maltz
  9. “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
  10. “When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.” – Jean Shinoda Bolen
  11. “Self-care is never a selfish act—it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others.” – Parker Palmer
  12. “When you adopt the viewpoint that there is nothing that exists that is not part of you, that there is no one who exists who is not part of you, that any judgment you make is self-judgment, that any criticism you level is self-criticism, you will wisely extend to yourself an unconditional love that will be the light of the world.” – Harry Palmer
  13. “Why should we worry about what others think of us, do we have more confidence in their opinions than we do our own?” – Brigham Young
  14. “To establish true self-esteem we must concentrate on our successes and forget about the failures and the negatives in our lives.” – Denis Waitley
  15. “A healthy self-love means we have no compulsion to justify to ourselves or others why we take vacations, why we sleep late, why we buy new shoes, why we spoil ourselves from time to time. We feel comfortable doing things which add quality and beauty to life.” – Andrew Matthews
  16. “Our self-respect tracks our choices. Every time we act in harmony with our authentic self and our heart, we earn our respect. It is that simple. Every choice matters.” – Dan Coppersmith
  17. “People may flatter themselves just as much by thinking that their faults are always present to other people’s minds, as if they believe that the world is always contemplating their individual charms and virtues.” – Elizabeth Gaskell
  18. “Don’t rely on someone else for your happiness and self-worth. Only you can be responsible for that. If you can’t love and respect yourself – no one else will be able to make that happen. Accept who you are – completely; the good and the bad – and make changes as YOU see fit – not because you think someone else wants you to be different.” – Stacey Charter
  19. “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” – Howard Washington Thurman

These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity and an understanding of life that fills them with compassions, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen.” – Elizabeth Kubler-Ross
  28. “You’re always with yourself, so you might as well enjoy the company.” – Diane Von Furstenberg

Brazil's National Cancer Institute Names GM Crops as Cause of Massive Pesticide Use http://www.altheadlines.com/brazils-national-cancer-institute-names-gm-crops-as-cause-of-massive-p-13260640/ Fri, 10 Apr 2015 17:04:22 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/brazils-national-cancer-institute-names-gm-crops-as-cause-of-massive-p-13260640/ gmo-brazil-soybeans.jpg
After the WHO’s classification of glyphosate as a “probable carcinogen”, Brazil’s cancer institute has condemned GM crops for placing the country in the top ranking globally for pesticide consumption, Claire Robinson reports.

Source: GM Watch

Report from INCA (in Portuguese) is here

The release of GM crops in Brazil has helped make it the largest consumer of agrochemicals in the world, according to a hard-hitting new report from Brazil’s National Cancer Institute José Alencar Gomes da Silva (INCA), part of the country’s Ministry of Health.

The report says that national consumption of agrochemicals is equivalent to 5.2 litres of agrochemicals per year for each inhabitant. Agrochemical sales increased from USD 2 billion in 2001 to 8.5 billion in 2011.

The report names GM crops as a key cause of the trend:
Importantly, the release of transgenic seeds in Brazil was one of the factors responsible for putting the country in first place in the ranking of agrochemical consumption – since the cultivation of these modified seeds requires the use of large quantities of these products.
The report continues:
The cropping pattern with the intensive use of pesticides generates major harms, including environmental pollution and poisoning of workers and the population in general. Acute pesticide poisoning is the best known effect and affects especially those exposed in the workplace (occupational exposure). This is characterized by effects such as irritation of the skin and eyes, itching, cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, spasms, breathing difficulties, seizures and death.
Already chronic poisoning may affect the whole population, as this is due to multiple exposures to pesticides, that is, the presence of pesticide residues in food and the environment, usually at low doses. Adverse effects of chronic exposure to pesticides may appear long after the exposure, and so are difficult to correlate with the agent. Among the effects that can be associated with chronic exposure to pesticide active ingredients are infertility, impotence, abortions, malformations, neurotoxicity, hormonal disruption, effects on the immune system, and cancer.
According to the report, the most recent results of the Analytical Program on Pesticide Residues of Brazil’s health agency ANVISA revealed samples with pesticide residues above the maximum permissible limit, as well as the presence of chemical substances not authorized for the food in question. It also noted the presence of pesticides that were in the process of being banned by ANVISA or that had never been registered in Brazil.

Regarding sources of exposure, the report says,
It is noteworthy that pesticide residues not only occur in fresh food, but also in many processed food products, such as cookies, chips, breads, breakfast cereals, lasagna, pizza and other ingredients that contain wheat, corn and soybeans, for example. Pesticide traces may still may be present in meat and milk of animals fed with these crops, due to the process of bioaccumulation.
Therefore, the concern over pesticides must not mean a reduction in the consumption of fruits and vegetables, which are key foods in healthy eating and of great importance in preventing cancer. The main focus must be on combating the use of pesticides, which contaminate all vital resources, including food, soil, water, breastmilk and air. In addition, methods of cultivation free from pesticide use can produce fruits, vegetables and legumes such as beans, with the greatest anticancer potential.
In 2012, the report states, INCA organized a seminar on pesticides and cancer in partnership with the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) and the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). The event brought together health professionals, researchers, farmers and consumers to discuss the risks to human health from exposure to pesticides, particularly its relationship with certain types of cancer. And in 2013, together with Fiocruz and Abrasco, INCA signed a declaration warning of the dangers of the pesticide market.

In that context, INCA says, the purpose of the new report is “to mark the position of the INCA against current pesticide use practices in Brazil and highlight the health risks, particularly with regard to the causes of cancer.” The report’s authors approvingly cite the recent verdict of the World Health Organisation’s cancer agency IARC that glyphosate herbicide is a “probable carcinogen”.

The report calls for stronger regulation of pesticides and for the development of agroecological alternatives to the dominant pesticide-dependent GMO agricultural model.

90% of Serotonin is Made in the Gut http://www.altheadlines.com/90-of-serotonin-is-made-in-the-gut-13260622/ Thu, 09 Apr 2015 17:03:26 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/90-of-serotonin-is-made-in-the-gut-13260622/ gut.jpg Although serotonin is well known as a brain neurotransmitter, it is estimated that 90 percent of the body's serotonin is made in the digestive tract. In fact, altered levels of this peripheral serotonin have been linked to diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. New research at Caltech, published in the April 9 issue of the journal Cell, shows that certain bacteria in the gut are important for the production of peripheral serotonin.

"More and more studies are showing that mice or other model organisms with changes in their gut microbes exhibit altered behaviors," explains Elaine Hsiao, research assistant professor of biology and biological engineering and senior author of the study. "We are interested in how microbes communicate with the nervous system. To start, we explored the idea that normal gut microbes could influence levels of neurotransmitters in their hosts."

Peripheral serotonin is produced in the digestive tract by enterochromaffin (EC) cells and also by particular types of immune cells and neurons. Hsiao and her colleagues first wanted to know if gut microbes have any effect on serotonin production in the gut and, if so, in which types of cells. They began by measuring peripheral serotonin levels in mice with normal populations of gut bacteria and also in germ-free mice that lack these resident microbes.

The researchers found that the EC cells from germ-free mice produced approximately 60 percent less serotonin than did their peers with conventional bacterial colonies. When these germ-free mice were recolonized with normal gut microbes, the serotonin levels went back up--showing that the deficit in serotonin can be reversed.

"EC cells are rich sources of serotonin in the gut. What we saw in this experiment is that they appear to depend on microbes to make serotonin--or at least a large portion of it," says Jessica Yano, first author on the paper and a research technician working with Hsiao.

The researchers next wanted to find out whether specific species of bacteria, out of the diverse pool of microbes that inhabit the gut, are interacting with EC cells to make serotonin.

After testing several different single species and groups of known gut microbes, Yano, Hsiao, and colleagues observed that one condition--the presence of a group of approximately 20 species of spore-forming bacteria--elevated serotonin levels in germ-free mice. The mice treated with this group also showed an increase in gastrointestinal motility compared to their germ-free counterparts, and changes in the activation of blood platelets, which are known to use serotonin to promote clotting.

Wanting to home in on mechanisms that could be involved in this interesting collaboration between microbe and host, the researchers began looking for molecules that might be key. They identified several particular metabolites--products of the microbes' metabolism--that were regulated by spore-forming bacteria and that elevated serotonin from EC cells in culture. Furthermore, increasing these metabolites in germ-free mice increased their serotonin levels.

Previous work in the field indicated that some bacteria can make serotonin all by themselves. However, this new study suggests that much of the body's serotonin relies on particular bacteria that interact with the host to produce serotonin, says Yano. "Our work demonstrates that microbes normally present in the gut stimulate host intestinal cells to produce serotonin," she explains.

"While the connections between the microbiome and the immune and metabolic systems are well appreciated, research into the role gut microbes play in shaping the nervous system is an exciting frontier in the biological sciences," says Sarkis K. Mazmanian, Luis B. and Nelly Soux Professor of Microbiology and a coauthor on the study. "This work elegantly extends previous seminal research from Caltech in this emerging field".

Additional coauthor Rustem Ismagilov, the Ethel Wilson Bowles and Robert Bowles Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, adds, "This work illustrates both the richness of chemical interactions between the hosts and their microbial communities, and Dr. Hsiao's scientific breadth and acumen in leading this work."

Serotonin is important for many aspects of human health, but Hsiao cautions that much more research is needed before any of these findings can be translated to the clinic.

"We identified a group of bacteria that, aside from increasing serotonin, likely has other effects yet to be explored," she says. "Also, there are conditions where an excess of peripheral serotonin appears to be detrimental."

Although this study was limited to serotonin in the gut, Hsiao and her team are now investigating how this mechanism might also be important for the developing brain. "Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter and hormone that is involved in a variety of biological processes. The finding that gut microbes modulate serotonin levels raises the interesting prospect of using them to drive changes in biology," says Hsiao.

The work was published in an article titled "Indigenous Bacteria from the Gut Microbiota Regulate Host Serotonin Biosynthesis." Press from California Institute of Technology and image E. Hsiao/Caltech.

Antidepressant Scam 69 Percent Aren't Even Depressed http://www.altheadlines.com/antidepressant-scam-69-percent-arent-even-depressed-13260613/ Thu, 09 Apr 2015 07:04:21 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/antidepressant-scam-69-percent-arent-even-depressed-13260613/ Depressed (4649749639) By Edgy Truth

We probably all know someone with “depression” or “anxiety.” But have you ever wondered how often that those diagnosis weren’t accurate at all? Well, now you can know, exactly, via these percentages from the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.

The majority of people taking antidepressant medications have never had major depressive disorder, and 38% have never met criteria for having any mental disorder, according to a study in Baltimore published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health researchers reviewed data from the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment Area from 1981 to 2005. They then assessed lifetime prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders among participants who reported current antidepressant use.

From 1,071 people, 13% in 2004-5 reported currently using antidepressant medications. “Among antidepressant users, 69% never met criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD),” stated the researchers. “And 38% never met criteria for MDD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, or generalized anxiety disorder in their lifetime.” (source | madinamerica)

There is some missing math here, but I am pretty sure my logic and reason skills can fill in that data for you. Most of these people being prescribed these medications are being done so at the hands of largely irresponsible, lazy and bribed doctors.

Depression and anxiety are very real, but to some degree, it should be acceptable (life is not easy) and to another degree it should be managed using changes in diet, yoga, meditations and a host of other low cost, non Big Pharma solutions. But that’s not the society we live in anymore where everyone has been Pavlovian trained to seek pills when the first hint of trouble arises.

19 Signs That American Families Are Being Economically Destroyed http://www.altheadlines.com/19-signs-that-american-families-are-being-economically-destroyed-13260601/ Wed, 08 Apr 2015 17:04:13 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/19-signs-that-american-families-are-being-economically-destroyed-13260601/ 19 - Public DomainThe systematic destruction of the American way of life is happening all around us, and yet most people have no idea what is happening.  Once upon a time in America, if you were responsible and hard working you could get a good paying job that could support a middle class lifestyle for an entire family even if you only had a high school education.

Things weren’t perfect, but generally almost everyone in the entire country was able to take care of themselves without government assistance.

We worked hard, we played hard, and our seemingly boundless prosperity was the envy of the entire planet.  But over the past several decades things have completely changed.  We consumed far more wealth than we produced, we shipped millions of good paying jobs overseas, we piled up the biggest mountain of debt in the history of the world, and we kept electing politicians that had absolutely no concern for the long-term future of this nation whatsoever.  So now good jobs are in very short supply, we are drowning in an ocean of red ink, the middle class is rapidly shrinking and dependence on the government is at an all-time high.  Even as we stand at the precipice of the next great economic crisis, we continue to make the same mistakes.  In the end, all of us are going to pay a very great price for decades of incredibly foolish decisions.  Of course a tremendous amount of damage has already been done.  The numbers that I am about to share with you are staggering.

The following are 19 signs that American families are being economically destroyed…

#1 The poorest 40 percent of all Americans now spend more than 50 percent of their incomes just on food and housing.

#2 For those Americans that don’t own a home, 50 percent of them spend more than a third of their incomes just on rent.

#3 The price of school lunches has risen to the 3 dollar mark at many public schools across the nation.

#4 McDonald’s “Dollar Menu & More” now includes items that cost as much as 5 dollars.

#5 The price of ground beef has doubled since 2009.

#6 In 1986, child care expenses for families with employed mothers used up 6.3 percent of all income.  Today, that figure is up to 7.2 percent.

#7 Incomes fell for the bottom 80 percent of all income earners in the United States during the 12 months leading up to June 2014.

#8 At this point, more than 50 percent of all American workers bring home less than $30,000 a year in wages.

#9 After adjusting for inflation, median household income has fallen by nearly $5,000 since 2007.

#10 According to the New York Times, the “typical American household” is now worth 36 percent less than it was worth a decade ago.

#11 47 percent of all Americans do not put a single penny out of their paychecks into savings.

#12 One survey found that 62 percent of all Americans are currently living paycheck to paycheck.

#13 According to the U.S. Department of Education, 33 percent of all Americans with student loans are currently behind on their student loan debt repayments.

#14 According to one recent report, 43 million Americans currently have unpaid medical debt on their credit reports.

#15 The rate of homeownership in the U.S. has been declining for seven years in a row, and it is now the lowest that it has been in 20 years.

#16 For each of the past six years, more businesses have closed in the United States than have opened.  Prior to 2008, this had never happened before in all of U.S. history.

#17 According to the Census Bureau, 65 percent of all children in the United States are living in a home that receives some form of aid from the federal government.

#18 If you have no debt at all, and you also have 10 dollars in your wallet, that you are wealthier than 25 percent of all Americans.

#19 On top of everything else, the average American must work from January 1st to April 24th just to pay all federal, state and local taxes.

All of us know people that once were doing quite well but that are now just struggling to get by from month to month.

Perhaps this has happened to you.

If you have ever been in that position, you probably remember what it feels like to have people look down on you.  Unfortunately, in our society the value that we place on individuals has a tremendous amount to do with how much money they have.

So if you don’t have much money, there are a lot of people out there that will treat you like dirt.  The following excerpt comes from a Washington Post article entitled “The poor are treated like criminals everywhere, even at the grocery store“…

Want to see a look of pure hatred? Pull out an EBT card at the grocery store.

Now that my kids are grown and gone, my Social Security check is enough to keep me from qualifying for government food benefits. But I remember well when we did qualify for a monthly EBT deposit, a whopping $22 — and that was before Congress cut SNAP benefits in November 2013. Like 70 percent of people receiving SNAP benefits, I couldn’t feed my family on that amount. But I remember the comments from middle-class people, the assumptions about me and my disability and what the poor should and shouldn’t be spending money on.

Have you ever seen this?

Have you ever experienced this yourself?

These days, most people on food stamps are not in that situation because they want to be.  Rather, they are victims of our long-term economic collapse.

And this is just the beginning.  When the next major economic crisis strikes, the suffering in this country is going to go to unprecedented levels.

As we enter that time, we are going to need a whole lot more love and compassion than we are exhibiting right now.

As a nation, we have made decades of incredibly bad decisions.  As a result, we are experiencing bad consequences which are going to become increasingly more severe.

The numbers that I just shared with you are not good.  But over the next several years they are going to get a whole lot worse.

Everything that can be shaken will be shaken, and life in America is about to change in a major way.

Monsanto's Dream Bill Returns to Block GMO Labeling Forever http://www.altheadlines.com/monsantos-dream-bill-returns-to-block-gmo-labeling-forever-13260581/ Tue, 07 Apr 2015 17:04:28 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/monsantos-dream-bill-returns-to-block-gmo-labeling-forever-13260581/ safe%2Band%2Baccurate%2Bfood%2Blabeling% Heather Callaghan

Almost exactly one year ago, I wrote about a new federal bill that would shut down the ability of the states to decide separately whether or not to label products that contained genetically engineered ingredients. Opponents aptly call it the DARK Act - Denying Americans the Right to Know...

Although sponsored by Rep. Pompeo, HR 1599 is the delight of the Grocer's Manufacturer's Association (GMA) - which supports corporations like Monsanto, Nestlé and Dow et al. The "Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2014" fizzled out last year, but the GMA worked to get it introduced in the current Congress.

Weston A. Price Foundation calls it "Monsanto's dream bill" because "it would allow big corporations that make and use GMOs to continue to hide them from consumers, keeping Americans in the dark about what is in their food." At the federal level....forever.

Readers have expressed differing opinions on the politics of labeling and how it should be handled. Really, you should know this one thing: once the door shuts on labeling it remains shut forever. That's the goal. You won't ever be able to assume that you know what you're eating again or be able to reasonably assume in the future that you can avoid GMOs. Remember that there are many more GE products in the pipeline, ready to populate the Earth, whether there's a market for them or not.

In other words, by force and by fraud. HR 1599 is simply closing the door on state-level solutions that consumers turned to because of FDA absurdity. It pretends to help with safety and accuracy by using a "hollow voluntary labeling scheme." Then it turns around and forces natural farmers to label their products non-GMO at their expense through a USDA program. Does that make any kind of sense to you??

Weston A. Price Foundation cautions (emphasis mine):
Voluntary Labeling is a Proven Failure
While we usually support voluntary programs over mandatory programs, when it comes to GMOs, this is the wrong approach. There has already been voluntary labeling for the last 13 years — and not one company has voluntarily labeled its products as containing GMOs.
As long as Americans don’t realize that GMOs are in their food, they’ll keep buying these companies’ products. This isn’t how the free market is supposed to work — this is essentially fraud!
This is a ridiculous point in time for America - with what's left of its consumer-driven economy - to have to pull teeth and beg to know what's in their food. It is akin to begging food companies to stop lacing your children's oatmeal with lead and asking repeatedly for the privilege of a label - a compromise if there ever was one. Since the GMA and GMO corporations know that labeling could mean the lack of purchase, this bill will assure that you have no choice. No recourse.

Aside from firmly rejecting these products and helping oneself individually while funds are available - a small amount of effort can go to making adamant demands from your Representatives to oppose HR 1599, letting them know what will happen with their job if they don't listen, and making sure to follow through. (Tweet at them, too, if you're on Twitter.)

Readers may recall my recent article "Proof That Past Is Prologue Pharmacologically" about the thousand-year-old ‘antibiotic’ recipe that stunned today’s scientists who ‘tried it out’ in their scientific laboratory, only to find that it killed off 90% of MRSA in mice.

For those who aren’t familiar with MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus), here is a short video that lets you see the damage MRSA can do to the human body.

Juxtapose that video with this one wherein the laboratory scientist, who conducted the Anglo-Saxon ‘antibiotic’ recipe experiment four times with the same amazing results, explains their surprise.

The take-away message from this “re-discovery” should be this, in my opinion: Human biochemistry has evolved over eons of time and brought us to where we are now in life. However, in less than 200 hundred short years in the United States of America at least, corporate modern medicine, with all its innovative ‘sciences’, e.g., vaccines, chemotherapy, and toxic pharmaceuticals, plus the chemical industry’s toxic chemical ‘enhancement’ of food growing and processing has brought humans into a tragic, serious, and rapid decline in human physiology, which is documented by the facts below:
1. Heart disease (which includes Heart Disease, Stroke and other Cardiovascular Diseases) is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, killing nearly 787,000 people alone in 2011.

2. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for people of most racial/ethnic groups in the United States, including African Americans, Hispanics and Whites. For Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders and American Indians or Alaska Natives, heart disease is second only to cancer. [CJF emphasis added]

3. Direct and indirect costs of heart disease total more than $320.1 billion. That includes health expenditures and lost productivity. [1]

[It should be noted that heart disease became a prominent health problem in the 1900s.]

4. The American Cancer Society has been keeping statistics since 1952. According to the ACS 2015 report, “Cancer is caused by external factors, such as tobacco, infectious organisms, and an unhealthy diet, and internal factors, such as inherited genetic mutations, hormones, and immune conditions. These factors may act together or in sequence to cause cancer.” [2]

[Note that chemicals or toxic pollution are missing from that list!]

Furthermore, the medical establishment apparently promoted tobacco products for many years, e.g., “Most doctors prefer Camels cigarettes” along with trans-fat margarines in the dietary approach to heart disease, and did NOT speak out against the chemicalization of the U.S. food supply and the fluoridation of public water systems. That deliberate scientific snafu—not challenging toxic chemicals harming the human organism—has given us what we have today: More chronic diseases at earlier ages than before, plus new syndromes, e.g., Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (now SEID), Barth Syndrome, heretofore not seen on the medical radar, or as in such prolific numbers, as current stats seem to document. Here’s a link to the numerous “syndromes.”

What’s a syndrome, you may be asking. “Syndrome” colloquially is taken to mean, “They don’t know what causes it.”

Two health problem examples are:
5. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In the late 1970s, the autism rate was one in 10,000; whereas today is it one in 68 in the USA. [3]
6. Alzheimer’s disease has spiraled out of control—almost into a pandemic among older citizens with onset often in the late 40s or early 50s. According to Alzheimer’s Association, “Of the 5.3 million Americans with Alzheimer's, an estimated 5.1 million people are age 65 and older, and approximately 200,000 individuals are under age 65 (younger-onset Alzheimer's).” [4]
According to Alzheimer’s Association, “Up to five percent of the more than 5 million Americans with Alzheimer’s have younger onset. Many people with younger onset are in their 40s and 50s. They have families, careers or are even caregivers themselves when Alzheimer’s disease strikes. In the U.S., it is estimated that approximately 200,000 people have younger onset.” [5]
7. Childhood Cancers. According to the National Cancer Institute, “Childhood cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death among children and adolescents (ages 1 to 19 years) in the United States, although cancer among children is rare.” [6]
What about brain cancer in children? According to Cancer.Net, “About 4,300 children and teens will be diagnosed with a brain or central nervous system tumor this year. More than half of these are in children younger than 15. This section deals with adult brain tumors; learn about brain tumors in children.” [7]
8. Diabetes: According to American Diabetes Association, “In 2012, 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3% of the population, had diabetes. Approximately 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes. Undiagnosed: Of the 29.1 million, 21.0 million were diagnosed, and 8.1 million were undiagnosed.” [8]
I could go on and on with statistics after statistics for Multiple Sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), and other statistical ‘anomalies’ regarding health in the USA—in particular. As a consumer health researcher since the late 1970s, I’ve seen statistics escalate dramatically.

I feel there is an apparent parallel correlation with pharmacology, vaccinology, and lack of proper scientific medical “Precautionary Principle” intervention with what’s happening to human health due to what I term “consensus science,” which promotes toxic chemicals as cures for human diseases. However, regarding the “Emperor’s extra special clothes,” no one in the peer-pressured medical world wants to see—or probably is pressured not to see—the overall downsides of toxic chemical intervention, especially the irrational prophylactic approach taken with totally toxic vaccines.

If toxic chemical medicine were as effective as proclaimed, no one should be dying from any of the above diseases they are contracting more prolifically than ever; they should live to 120 years old! Something is dramatically wrong with a healing paradigm that is built on a fragile house of cards based in toxic chemicals, i.e., vaccinology and prescription drugs, and the monopoly Big Pharma maintains on the healthcare system in the USA, if not the world. Shall we “follow the money,” as they say?

The cost of healthcare in the USA:

Forbes: Annual U.S. Healthcare Spending Hits $3.8 Trillion
http://www.forbes.com/sites/danmunro/2014/02/02/annual-u-s-healthcare-spending-hits-3-8-trillion/

Prescription Drug Expenditures and Growth by Sector in USA: $325,992MILLION
http://www.ashpmedia.org/AJHP/DrugExpenditures-2014.pdf

The Vaccine Dollar Market totaled $23.9BILLION world-wide in 2013! However, what was reported on Kalorama Information [below] is total spin and needs to be challenged.
In the U.S., for example, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has found that Influenza is responsible for 20,000 to 40,000 deaths annually, and up to 50,000 deaths and an estimated 200,000 excess hospitalizations at a cost of $750 million to $1 billion during epidemic years.
Realistically, the BMJ online states,
The CDC website states what has become commonly accepted and widely reported in the lay and scientific press: annually “about 36 000 [Americans] die from flu” (www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease.htm) and “influenza/pneumonia” is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States (www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/lcod.htm).
But why are flu and pneumonia bundled together? Is the relationship so strong or unique to warrant characterising them as a single cause of death? [CJF emphasis added]
Furthermore, Peter Doshi, PhD, [Johns Hopkins, Baltimore]
[…] asserts that influenza is a case of “disease mongering” in an effort to expand markets. He points to the fact that deaths from flu declined sharply during the middle of the 20th century, long before the huge vaccine campaigns that kicked off the 21st century. [9] [CJF emphasis added]
To further elaborate on flu/influenza deaths, here’s the real kicker, I think. According to the CDC’s 2012-2013 Influenza Season website,
As of October 2014, more than 170 laboratory-confirmed, influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported during the 2012-2013 flu season. [10] [CJF emphasis added]
Where are the thousands of laboratory-confirmed deaths, CDC? Laboratory confirmed is the KEY, not the estimates CDC likes to put out as their fear gospel.

I could go on and on with more examples, but this article would never end. I think readers ought to get the idea that sickness spin is preferred and promoted in the media and doctors’ offices, as it builds financial bottom lines for various vested corporate interests, including members of the public who invest in Pharma stocks on the stock exchanges. That’s why botanicals and plants will never be used by Big Pharma-based allopathic medicine; they cannot be patented to make Big Bucks!

Numerous books have been written about how man-made toxic pharmaceuticals have tremendous downsides that affect health negatively and often permanently, like acute flaccid paralysis, as happened after oral polio vaccinations in India.

One book that I highly recommend is The Risks of Prescription Drugs. Another is the Marcia Angell, MD, book, The Truth About the Drug Companies: How They Deceive Us and What to Do About It. For 20 years Dr. Angell was the editor at the New England Journal of Medicine; she ought to know!

That ancient, but recently-found, ‘antibiotic’ recipe and its medicinal cousins in the Anglo-Saxon healing system need to be implemented as originally formulated, not patented synthetically, since the synthetic version may give us more super bugs to deal with. We have enough already from all the antibiotics given to cattle that are raised as food.

The EMP Threat: All It Would Take Is A Couple Of Explosions To Send America Back To The 1800s http://www.altheadlines.com/the-emp-threat-all-it-would-take-is-a-couple-of-explosions-to-send-am-13260573/ Tue, 07 Apr 2015 07:01:58 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/the-emp-threat-all-it-would-take-is-a-couple-of-explosions-to-send-am-13260573/ EMP ThreatOur entire way of life can be ended in a single day.  And it wouldn’t even take a nuclear war to do it.  All it would take for a rogue nation or terror organization to bring us to our knees is the explosion of a couple well-placed nuclear devices high up in our atmosphere.  The resulting electromagnetic pulses would fry electronics from coast to coast.  Of course this could also be accomplished without any attack.  Scientists tell us that massive solar storms have hit our planet before, and that it is inevitable that there will be more in the future.  As you will read about below, the most recent example of this was “the Carrington Event” in 1859.  If a similar burst from the sun hit us today, experts tell us that life in America could suddenly resemble life in the 1800s, and the economic damage caused could potentially be in the trillions of dollars.  This is one of the greatest potential threats that we are facing as a nation, and yet Barack Obama has essentially done nothing to get us prepared.

The technology necessary to conduct such an electromagnetic pulse attack against the United States has become much more accessible in recent years.  According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, even rogue nations such as North Korea and Iran either already have or will soon have the capability to hurt us in this way…

Rogue nations such as North Korea (and possibly Iran) will soon match Russia and China and have the primary ingredients for an EMP attack: simple ballistic missiles such as Scuds that could be launched from a freighter near our shores; space-launch vehicles able to loft low-earth-orbit satellites; and simple low-yield nuclear weapons that can generate gamma rays and fireballs.

If a successful, large scale EMP attack ever did take place, it would be a catastrophe beyond anything that the United States has ever seen before.  The EMP Commission, which was established by Congress, says that it is likely that most of us would end up dead

What would a successful EMP attack look like? The EMP Commission, in 2008, estimated that within 12 months of a nationwide blackout, up to 90% of the U.S. population could possibly perish from starvation, disease and societal breakdown.

In 2009 the congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States, whose co-chairmen were former Secretaries of Defense William Perry and James Schlesinger, concurred with the findings of the EMP Commission and urged immediate action to protect the electric grid. Studies by the National Academy of Sciences, the Department of Energy, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the National Intelligence Council reached similar conclusions.

If you are a terrorist, a dictator or a fanatic that is looking for a “killshot” for the United States, those kinds of numbers would certainly get your attention.

And it was recently reported by WND that the Iranian military has already been playing around with such a scenario…

Peter Vincent Pry, who is executive director of a congressional advisory group called the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, raised the alarm as the agreement is about to be finalized.

He said U.S. military officials have confirmed such an Iranian plan.

“Iranian military documents describe such a scenario – including a recently translated Iranian military textbook that endorses nuclear EMP attack against the United States,” Pry wrote in a recent column in Israel’s main online media network, Aruz Sheva.

“Iran with a small number of nuclear missiles can by EMP attack threaten the existence of modernity and be the death knell of Western principles of international law, humanism and freedom,” he said.

Very chilling stuff.

And of course there are many, many others out there that would love to see the U.S. taken down other than just the Iranians.

Meanwhile, our power grid is far more vulnerable than most Americans would dare to imagine.

In previous articles, I discussed a recent Federal Energy Regulatory Commission report which stated the following…

“Destroy nine interconnection substations and a transformer manufacturer and the entire United States grid would be down for at least 18 months, probably longer.”

Are you starting to get the picture?

Our entire way of life depends upon electricity.  If you take away that electricity, our society is transformed literally overnight.

A successful EMP would be an utter nightmare for this nation.  Just consider what U.S. Representative Scott Perry had to say about a potential attack last year

The consequences of such an attack could be catastrophic; all electronics, power systems, and information systems could be shut down,” Rep. Scott Perry said in prepared remarks during an EMP hearing in May held by the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security. “This could then cascade into interdependent infrastructures such as water, gas, and telecommunications. While we understand this is an extreme case, we must always be prepared in case a rogue state decides to utilize this technology.”

In essence, suddenly nothing would work and just about everything that we take for granted would suddenly be gone.

In a previous article, I spelled out some of the implications of such an event…

-There would be no heat for your home.
-Water would no longer be pumped into most homes.
-Your computer would not work.
-There would be no Internet.
-Your phones would not work.
-There would be no television.
-There would be no radio.
-ATM machines would be shut down.
-There would be no banking.
-Your debit cards and credit cards would not work.
-Without electricity, most gas stations would not be functioning.
-Most people would be unable to do their jobs without electricity and employment would collapse.
-Commerce would be brought to a standstill.
-Hospitals would not be able to function normally.
-You would quickly start running out of medicine.
-All refrigeration would shut down and frozen foods in our homes and supermarkets would start to go bad.

And as I mentioned above, all of this can happen even without an attack.

A direct hit from a major solar storm can cause the exact same thing.

In fact, NASA says that there is a 12 percent chance that such a storm will hit us during the next ten years…

NASA is warning that there’s a 12 percent chance an extreme solar storm will hit Earth in the next decade, sending out massive shock waves that would knock out grids across the world.

The economic impact of this doomsday scenario could exceed $2 trillion — or 20 times the cost of Hurricane Katrina, according to the National Academy of Sciences.

In recent years, we have been really lucky.

There was a close call in 2012 and another one in 2013.

The following is an excerpt from an upcoming book that I have co-authored with Barbara Fix that will soon be published entitled “Get Prepared Now”…

Most people have absolutely no idea that the Earth barely missed being fried by a massive EMP burst from the sun in 2012 and in 2013. And earlier in 2014 there was another huge solar storm which would have caused tremendous damage if it had been directed at our planet. If any of those storms would have directly hit us, the result would have been catastrophic. Electrical transformers would have burst into flames, power grids would have gone down and much of our technology would have been fried. In essence, life as we know it would have ceased to exist – at least for a time. These kinds of solar storms have hit the Earth many times before, and experts tell us that it is inevitable that it will happen again. The most famous one happened in 1859, and was known as the Carrington Event. But other than the telegraph, humanity had very little dependence on technology at the time. If another Carrington Event happened today, it would be a complete and utter nightmare. A study by Lloyd’s of London has concluded that it would have taken a $2,600,000,000,000 chunk out of the global economy, and it would take up to a decade to repair the damage. Unfortunately, scientists insist that it is going to happen at some point. The only question is when.

So keep an eye on the sun.

The giant ball of fire that we revolve around has started to behave very erratically, and it has the power to end our way of life at any time.

In fact, scientists tell us that we are about to get hit with a “glancing blow” on April 7th…

A filament of magnetism stretching halfway across the sun erupted during the late hours of April 4th (22:00-23:00 UT). The eruption split the sun’s atmosphere, hurling a CME into space and creating a “canyon of fire,” shown in a movie recorded by the Solar Dynamics Observatory: The glowing walls of the canyon trace the original channel where the filament was suspended by magnetic forces above the sun’s surface. From end to end, the structure stretches more than 300,000 km–a real Grand Canyon.

Fragments of the exploding filament formed the core of a CME that raced away from the sun at approximately 900 km/s (2 million mph): image. Most of the CME will miss Earth, but not all. The cloud is expected to deliver a a glancing blow to our planet’s magnetic field could on April 7th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

The event of April 7th is not going to cause us major problems.  But someday there will be a solar storm that will.

Personally, I cannot even imagine what life would be like without electricity.

Because we have become so deeply dependent on technology, most of us would have absolutely no idea how to live without it.

An electromagnetic pulse attack would be one of the fastest ways to cripple America and end the dominance of the United States in world affairs.  And in this day and age, there are hundreds of millions of people around the planet that would love to see that happen.

So to not take steps to protect our power grid from such an attack is very foolish.  But that is precisely what Barack Obama (and presidents before him) have chosen to do.  We have technology which would mitigate the damage from an electromagnetic pulse, but rather than spend the money Obama has decided to just hope that it will never happen.

Up to this point, we have been fortunate.

But someday, our luck may run out.

weight%2Bloss%2Btips1.jpg
Those who drink diet soda thinking it will help them shed unwanted belly fat may see their waistlines expand instead. New analyses from an observational study of San Antonio men and women age 65 and older seem to indicate this.

The San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging (SALSA), led by Helen P. Hazuda, Ph.D., professor of medicine in the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, gathered data on health status and lifestyles of 749 Mexican-American and European-American elders, then tracked the health outcomes in 466 survivors for more than nine years. The number of sodas they consumed - and whether they were diet or regular - was recorded by interviews at the beginning of the study and at each of three follow-up visits, where SALSA personnel measured participants' waist circumferences and other parameters.

Findings

Among SALSA participants who reported that they did not consume any diet sodas, waist circumference increased less than 1 inch on average over the total follow-up period, said Sharon P. Fowler, M.P.H., adjunct faculty in the School of Medicine at the Health Science Center. Among participants who reported occasional use - drinking less than one diet soda a day - waist circumference increased almost 2 inches. And among those who consumed diet sodas every day, or more often than once a day, waist circumference increased over 3 inches. With senior author Dr. Hazuda and co-author Ken Williams, M.S., adjunct faculty in the School of Medicine, Fowler is lead author of a paper describing the data in the April issue of theJournal of the American Geriatrics Society.

These findings raise a red flag for seniors because fat around the waist - the proverbial tire around the middle - includes not only fat just under the skin but also fat that accumulates around internal organs, known as viscera. Many studies have linked visceral fat with increased inflammation and risk of metabolic disease, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, cancer and mortality. When waistlines expand in older age, visceral fat increases disproportionately, and risk rises.

"Because Dr. Hazuda's study measured waist circumference as well as total weight, we were able to look at what happened to participants' abdominal obesity," Fowler said. "The increases in abdominal fat were more than three times as great in daily diet soda users as in non-users, during the very time in life when increasing waist circumference is associated with increased risk of these serious medical conditions, and mortality itself."

Different from past research

The group's previous related research, published in 2008, looked at the association between total consumption of artificially sweetened drinks - soda plus coffee plus tea - and long-term weight gain among participants in the San Antonio Heart Study, led by Michael Stern, M.D., emeritus professor in the School of Medicine. That study found that, among more than 3,600 25- to 65-year-old Mexican-Americans and European-Americans followed for seven to eight years, body mass index and risk of obesity rose consistently with increases in artificially sweetened beverage intake.

In the current SALSA report, the researchers adjusted statistically for a large number of variables that might have affected the findings, including initial waist size, exercise level and whether the participant had diabetes or smoked. "Even when you adjust for those things, you have this independent effect of diet soda consumption on waist circumference change over time," Dr. Hazuda said.

"There is definitely debate about whether the association between diet soda intake and cardiometabolic risk, which has been detected in several large observational studies, is based on an actual causal relationship," Fowler said. "We are simply reporting the statistical association we found: that, over almost a decade, waist circumference increased significantly, in a dose-response manner, with increasing diet soda intake in this group of older individuals. These results are consistent with findings from a number of other observational studies of increased long-term risk of diabetes, heart attack, stroke and other major medical problems among daily diet soda users."

Although the study cohort is relatively small, with 466 individuals, the results were based on 3,706 person-years of follow-up. The findings were in people age 65 and older; whether they would apply to younger people is not known. The findings were also most pronounced among those who were already overweight or obese at the outset of SALSA. It is an observational study rather than a randomized, controlled trial design, which is the gold standard in clinical epidemiology.

"In spite of these limitations, however, the evidence, taken together with relevant findings from other studies in both humans and animals, is pretty compelling," Dr. Hazuda said. "We're trying to provide the evidence base for meaningful decision-making to improve both the health of individuals, and the public health."

University Study: Facebook is Bad for Your Mental Health http://www.altheadlines.com/university-study-facebook-is-bad-for-your-mental-health-13260566/ Mon, 06 Apr 2015 15:29:01 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/university-study-facebook-is-bad-for-your-mental-health-13260566/ UH study links Facebook use to depressive symptoms. Findings suggest amount of time spent and social comparison on Facebook impacts mental health.

facebook.jpg

The social media site, Facebook, can be an effective tool for connecting with new and old friends. However, some users may find themselves spending quite a bit of time viewing Facebook and may inevitably begin comparing what's happening in their lives to the activities and accomplishments of their friends.

According to University of Houston (UH) researcher Mai-Ly Steers, this kind of social comparison paired with the amount of time spent on Facebook may be linked to depressive symptoms. Steers' research on the topic is presented in the article, "Seeing Everyone Else's Highlight Reels: How Facebook Usage is Linked to Depressive Symptoms" published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology.

"Although social comparison processes have been examined at length in traditional contexts, the literature is only beginning to explore social comparisons in online social networking settings," said Steers, a doctoral candidate in social psychology at UH.

Steers conducted two studies to investigate how social comparison to peers on Facebook might impact users' psychological health. Both studies provide evidence that Facebook users felt depressed when comparing themselves to others.

"It doesn't mean Facebook causes depression, but that depressed feelings and lots of time on Facebook and comparing oneself to others tend to go hand in hand," said Steers.

The first study found an association between time spent on Facebook and depressive symptoms for both genders. However, the results demonstrated that making Facebook social comparisons mediated the link between time spent on Facebook and depressive symptoms for men only. Similarly, the second study found a relationship between the amount of time spent on Facebook and depressive symptoms was mediated by social comparisons on Facebook. Unlike the first study, gender did not moderate these associations.

The concept of social comparison is not new. In fact, it has been studied in face-to-face contexts since the 1950's. However, engaging in social comparisons on online social media sites may make people feel even worse.

"One danger is that Facebook often gives us information about our friends that we are not normally privy to, which gives us even more opportunities to socially compare," Steers said. "You can't really control the impulse to compare because you never know what your friends are going to post. In addition, most of our Facebook friends tend to post about the good things that occur in their lives, while leaving out the bad. If we're comparing ourselves to our friends' 'highlight reels,' this may lead us to think their lives are better than they actually are and conversely, make us feel worse about our own lives."

Steers said that people afflicted with emotional difficulties may be particularly susceptible to depressive symptoms due to Facebook social comparison after spending more time on medium. For already distressed individuals, this distorted view of their friends' lives may make them feel alone in their internal struggles, which may compound their feelings of loneliness and isolation.

"This research and previous research indicates the act of socially comparing oneself to others is related to long-term destructive emotions. Any benefit gained from making social comparisons is temporary and engaging in frequent social comparison of any kind may be linked to lower well-being," said Steers.

Steers hopes the results of these studies will help people understand that technological advances often possess both intended and unintended consequences. Further, she hopes her research will help guide future interventions that target the reduction of Facebook use among those at risk for depression.

Glyphosate: One of 3 Herbicides Causing Antibiotic Resistance http://www.altheadlines.com/glyphosate-one-of-3-herbicides-causing-antibiotic-resistance-13260567/ Mon, 06 Apr 2015 15:29:01 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/glyphosate-one-of-3-herbicides-causing-antibiotic-resistance-13260567/ Penicillin model Heather Callaghan

The overuse of antibiotics, 80 percent of which are foisted on factory farm animals, is a part of modern day antibiotic resistance. That is, an environment that allows surviving bacteria to mount a strong defense against antibiotics, making them useless against infection. Other factors like inattentive "sick care" contribute too - when antibiotics are handed out like cough drops or when lack of self-care leads to the constant request for them at the doctor's office or ER.

In recent years, both patients and the medical community have been blamed for the influx of antibiotic resistance. This is unfair, when not only were these methods approved as safe, but also consider their comfortable use for so many decades. (And again, most antibiotics are used in farming.) So what could explain the unbreakable and aggressive new strains of bacteria?

Scientists now think that another unfortunate part of corporate industrial farming has led to the rapid and exponential increase of antibiotic resistance.

"Biocides" like herbicides are tested individually for their toxicity levels but not for where it counts, such as at their sublethal effects at the microbe level. Researchers from New Zealand and Mexico discovered that glyphosate (aka Monsanto's Roundup), dicamba (Kamba, propietery to Monsanto), and 2,4-D play a role in antibiotic resistance. They tested their theory on e.coli and salmonella bacteria which cause potentially dangerous food poisoning and are sometimes found on factory farmed foods.

The bacteria were treated with common antibiotics like tetracycline, Ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol, ampicillin and kanamycin. Most of the time, low levels of the herbicides created antibiotic resistance before the antibiotics had a chance to work. Their work was just published in mBio.

The researchers emphasize that the problem is on-farm, not in the food itself.

They say:
The effects found are relevant wherever people or animals are exposed to herbicides at the range of concentrations achieved where they are applied.
This may include, for example, farm animals and pollinators in rural areas and potentially children and pets in urban areas. The effects were detectable only at herbicide concentrations that were above currently allowed residue levels on food.
Farmworkers, rodents and honeybees exposed to drifts were thought to be most at risk for the consequences. They have a hunch that the combination of the herbicides produces more deleterious effects.

They warn:
New antibiotics are hard to find and can take decades to become available. Effects of chemicals such as herbicides could conflict with measures taken to slow the spread of antibiotic resistance.
2,4-D, infamous for its original intention of use in warfare and its actual use as an ingredient in Monsanto's "Agent Orange" during Viet Nam - is used in many, many herbicide concoctions.

Last Fall, the government approved and registered Dow's "Enlist Duo" maize, genetically engineered to withstand even stronger applications of herbicides (six states so far). This coincides with the approval of the Enlist Duo herbicide (glyphosate and 2,4-D) which was ironically created to combat glyphosate resistance. Likewise, Monsanto is applying for approval for new GE crops that will withstand its new concoction - glyphosate and dicamba.

These are just more examples of how regulatory agencies do not cater to the consumer, but rather protect corporate interests much to everyone's degrading health. Aside from taking extra care of oneself, especially where diet is concerned, anyone reading this might also want to educate themselves with The Cornucopia's "Gut-Wrenching"report on glyphosate. It's an eye-opener for sure...

The Guardian reports statistics on opium agriculture in Afghanistan:

“…the US counternarcotics mission in Afghanistan stands out: opiate production has climbed steadily over recent years to reach record-high levels last year.”

“Far from eradicating the deep-rooted opiate trade, US counternarcotics efforts have proven useless, according to a series of recent official inquiries. Other aspects of the billions that the US has poured into Afghanistan over the last 13 years of war have even contributed to the opium boom.”

“In December, the United Nations reported a 60% growth in Afghan land used for opium poppy cultivation since 2011, up to 209,000 hectares…”

“…the [UN] inspector general also noted that US reconstruction projects, particularly those devoted to ‘improved irrigation, roads, and agricultural assistance’ were probably leading to the explosion in opium cultivation.

“’[A]ffordable deep-well technology turned 200,000 hectares of desert in southwestern Afghanistan into arable land over the past decade,’ the inspector general found, concluding that ‘much of this newly arable land is dedicated to opium cultivation’.”

Who’s kidding who?

In Colombia, the US government proved it could eradicate coca and opium-poppy growing fields. One of the solutions was an herbicide called Roundup. You may have heard of it.

But in Afghanistan, the US just didn’t remember that. It skipped their mind. Oops.

Suddenly, the Afghanistan mission became one of good will. Mustn’t upset the farmers. In Colombia, upsetting the farmers was perfectly all right.

When you can lessen a problem but choose not to, you want the problem to persist. It’s simple.

And at that point, the problem becomes an opportunity—it always was.

More opium poppy; therefore, more heroin. More trafficking, more profits.

Since the US government has been consciously facilitating the growth of opium farming in Afghanistan, it stands to reason that government players have been taking their cut of the action.

If the US government, which has been fighting a full-scale war in Afghanistan, wanted to destroy the opium-heroin business in that country, it had the ideal opportunity.

The mission would have been far easier than waging “the war against drugs” in Mexico, where US military intervention has been limited.

In Afghanistan, there were US troops on the ground. There were air attacks. What else would you need?

Pentagon planners spend their lives working out multiple scenarios for possible wars in various regions of the planet. They take into account all aspects and contingencies.

In planning for a war in Afghanistan, what to do about the opium-poppy growing fields would have been high on the list of options.

So opium-poppy farmers were no “delicate problem” the US invading force encountered after entering the country. There were no surprises.

Since the US invaded Afghanistan, the Army knowingly undertook operations that would definitely expand opium-poppy agriculture.

Of course, the CIA’s connections to the drug trade in Afghanistan go back a long way, so it’s no surprise that the US war in Afghanistan has facilitated and expanded opium-poppy production.

Peter Dale Scott, in his essay, “Drugs, Contras, and the CIA,” writes:

“[Circa 1980], the CIA was arming and advising heroin-trafficking guerrillas in Afghanistan. Its preferred leader, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, became for a period one of the leading heroin suppliers in the world.”

“In 1979, when the U.S. first established contact with heroin-trafficking guerrillas in Afghanistan, no heroin from the so-called Golden Crescent on the Afghan-Pakistan border was known to reach the United States. By 1984, according to the Reagan Administration, 54 percent of the heroin reaching this country came from the Afghan-Pakistan border.”

” [CIA officer] John Millis had served for thirteen years as a case officer supplying covert CIA aid to the heroin-trafficking guerrillas in Afghanistan…At least one of the airlines involved in the Afghan support operation, Global International Airways, was also named in connection with the [US] Iran-Contra scandal…”

The war against drugs? A towering joke.

A Global Financial Reset Is Coming: A Deal Is Being Made Between All The Central Banks http://www.altheadlines.com/a-global-financial-reset-is-coming-a-deal-is-being-made-between-all-t-13260562/ Sun, 05 Apr 2015 21:36:33 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/a-global-financial-reset-is-coming-a-deal-is-being-made-between-all-t-13260562/ gator-dees.png Dees Illustration Mac Slavo

There is an unprecedented reset coming to world financial markets, and if you’ve been paying attention it’s impossible to ignore the signs. In fact mega-investment funds, governments and central banks have been secretly buying up and storing physical gold in anticipation of an event that will leave the U.S. dollar effectively worthless and governments around the world angling for a new global currency mechanism, according to mining executive Keith Neumeyer.

But before the reset can happen Neumeyer, who recently founded First Mining Finance and has partnered with billionaire alternative asset investors like Eric Sprott and Rick Rule, says that foreign creditors must first deleverage their U.S. dollar debt, a move that is happening right now and is evidenced by the recent strength of the U.S. dollar.

Once these U.S. debt holders unwind their positions, however, the dollar will be allowed to crash and we should prepare for a total financial, economic and monetary realignment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK9ysU4dnNI

(Watch the full interview at Future Money Trends)
With the central banks now buying gold… which is quite unique… we haven’t seen that in our lifetimes… they’ve always been sellers of gold and now they’re buyers of gold… I think there will be a reset of the financial industry…
I think China is being allowed to accumulate gold purposefully by the American government… I believe that the Chinese need to own at least the same amount as the U.S. owns before this reset occurs. I think that there’s some kind of deal that’s being made between all the central banks behind the scenes and that’s why you’re seeing governments accumulating the metal.
I do believe there will be some kind of new currency created with the backing… and it might not be a direct backing of the metal… but it’ll be some kind of blend of currency.. it could be through SDR’s… Special Drawing Rights… or some type of mechanism… I think that’s where we’re going.
And when that reset occurs I think gold will be left to rise… and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see three…four… five thousand dollar gold over the next five years.
Because the price of gold has been suppressed to allow governments and central banks to accumulate it cheaply, Neumeyer sees opportunity in the mining industry and that’s why his latest mineral bank project is mimicking their actions and buying up physical mining assets around the world.

And though Western mainstream media pundits argue that the recent strength of the U.S. stock market and the U.S. dollar are proof positive that an economic recovery has taken hold, Neumeyer says exactly the opposite is happening.

The reason for the recent rise in the value of the world’s reserve currency, he suggests, is a result of the massive unwinding of U.S. debt as private investors and governments around the globe know a rush for the exits is coming soon:
The view on the strength of the dollar recently is the fact that it’s short-term. You’ve got so much U.S. debt out there and governments are now getting rid of their U.S. debt and converting all the debt to local debt… that’s causing a huge demand for dollars in order to make that conversion, so this whole dollar rally is basically a deleveraging against the U.S. dollar… you’re not seeing that story showing up anywhere in North America.
Once the world is deleveraged than the U.S. dollar… then basically the U.S. dollar will crash and that will be the beginning of this new reset.
Everything, of course, is very hush-hush but, as Neumeyer explains, most of the influential players involved know exactly what is going on and they are making their moves right now to ensure they survive the coming financial reset:
The gold accumulation that’s going on… this is gold that’s outside of the system… you don’t hear about it… these are big sovereign wealth funds, these are government funds, these are banks that are buying the physical metal… they are very intimately involved in the sector and they know what’s going on.
[…]
Definitely world governments and central banks around the world are unwinding their U.S. debt. They’re trying to bring their debt home and that’s causing the upside pressure on the dollar.
If Neumeyer is right, and all the signs suggest his assessment is fairly accurate, then the recent strength of the U.S. dollar will be short-lived. Once deleveraging by governments and central banks has been completed they will unleash an economic, financial and monetary storm that will change the very fabric of the global order.

The consequences are difficult to predict, but given that these entities have been buying up gold like their lives depended on it, the notion of an ounce of the precious metal being valued at $5,000 per ounce isn’t out of the question.

USDA research links pesticides to monarch butterfly declines http://www.altheadlines.com/usda-research-links-pesticides-to-monarch-butterfly-declines-13260561/ Sun, 05 Apr 2015 17:04:07 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/usda-research-links-pesticides-to-monarch-butterfly-declines-13260561/ MonarchButterfly.jpg By Jonathan Latham, PhD

USDA researchers have identified the neonicotinoid insecticide clothianidin as a likely contributor to monarch butterfly declines in North America. The USDA research is published in the journal Science of Nature and was published online on April 3rd (Pecenka and Lundgren 2015).

Monarch butterfly populations (Danaus Plexippus) have declined precipitously in North America in the last twenty years. This decline has commonly been linked to loss of milkweeds (Asclepias species) from farmer’s fields. Monarch caterpillars are dependent on milkweeds. The ability of farmers to kill them with the Monsanto herbicide Roundup (glyphosate) has therefore led to this herbicide being considered as a major contributor to the decline of the monarch butterfly.

MONARCH (MALE, DANAUS PLEXIPPUS)

However, industrial farming methods include other known or potential causes of monarch disappearances. One of these is the known toxicity of Bt insecticides found in GMO crops. For instance, in 2006 pollen from Syngenta’s BT176 corn (no longer on the US market) was shown to have a lethal dose of 14 pollen grains towards caterpillars of European Swallowtail butterflies. Pollen from GMO crops falls on the milkweeds where monarchs feed and individual maize plants produce millions of pollen grains.

Neonicotinoids have been strongly implicated in pollinator declines worldwide. As shown by a report from a task force of the International Union of Nature Conservation based in Switzerland. Neonicotinoids, such as clothianidin (Bayer), are a particular hazard because, unlike most pesticides, they are soluble molecules. From soil or seed treatments they can reach nectar and are found in pollen. Neonicotinoids are now the most widely used pesticides in the world (Goulson 2013). Up to now there has been negligible research on the effects of neonicotinoids on butterflies and this new research is therefore the first to link neonicotinoids to the survival and reproduction of any butterfly.

In their experiments the USDA researchers showed that clothianidin can have effects on monarch caterpillars at doses as low as 1 part per billion. The effects seen in their experiments were on caterpillar size, caterpillar weight, and caterpillar survival. The lethal dose (LC50) they found to be 15 parts per billion. The caterpillars in their experiments were exposed to clothianidin-treated food for only 36hrs, however. The researchers therefore noted that in agricultural environments caterpillar exposure would likely be greater than in their experiments. Furthermore, that butterfly caterpillars would be exposed in nature to other pesticides, including other neonicotinoids.

In sampling experiments from agricultural areas in South Dakota the researchers found that milkweeds had on average over 1ppb clothianidin.

On this basis the USDA researchers concluded that “neonicotinoids could negatively affect larval monarch populations.”

This new report is therefore the first to link neonicotinoids to monarch butterfly survival and reproduction. Neonicotinoids are neurotoxins that are partially banned in the EU.

“These results are very worrisome, but it is also crucial not to get lost in the specifics of chemical toxicology and individual species declines” says Allison Wilson, Science Director of the Bioscience Resource Project, a non-profit public interest science organization. “Industrial agriculture is a lethal combination of methods that is causing the extinction of thousands of species worldwide. It is affecting birds, amphibians, bats and other pollinators besides butterflies. Many ecosystems are staring down the barrel.”

“The saddest irony is that, though industrial agriculture experts call their methods ‘scientific’, using toxins to kill pests runs contrary to all biological understanding, including the sciences of ecology, of evolution, and of complex systems. The proof of this is that the very best results in all of agriculture come from farming methods that reject all industrial inputs. Agribusiness would very much like that not to be known.”

“The best news is that there is a simple way to transfer to sustainable agricultural methods: remove the subsidies for industrial farming.”

Dispersant used in Gulf oil spill causes injuries to humans and aquatic animals http://www.altheadlines.com/dispersant-used-in-gulf-oil-spill-causes-injuries-to-humans-and-aquati-13260558/ Sun, 05 Apr 2015 12:00:11 CST http://www.altheadlines.com/dispersant-used-in-gulf-oil-spill-causes-injuries-to-humans-and-aquati-13260558/ corexit.jpg Activist Post

New research from investigators at the University of Alabama at Birmingham suggests that Corexit EC9500A, an oil-dispersal agent widely used in the Gulf of Mexico following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, contributes to damage to epithelium cells within the lungs of humans and gills of marine creatures. The study also identifies an enzyme that is expressed in epithelial cells across species that has protective properties against Corexit-induced damage.

The investigators say that finding a way to boost or enhance that enzyme, heme oxygenase-1 or HO-1, could prevent lung damage in cases of exposure to oil dispersal agents in future. The study, published in PLOS ONE on April 2, 2015, looked at epithelium cells — the cells lining the airways of humans and the gills of certain marine species, in particular zebrafish and blue crabs.

The Deepwater Horizon spill, which began April 20, 2010, involved 205.8 million gallons of crude oil that spilled from a well head blow-out during the next three months. A dispersant, Corexit EC9500A, was used to degrade and break down the oil. A total of 1.84 million gallons of chemical dispersant was sprayed on the water or applied below the surface of the water.

"There were some 48,000 workers involved in the cleanup operations, and it is possible that workers were exposed to Corexit via inhalation,” said Veena Antony, M.D., professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine and senior author of the paper. “Cough, shortness of breath and sputum production were among symptoms expressed by workers.”

The epithelium is a thin layer of cells that provides a continuous, critical and a highly regulated barrier to environmental insults. Inflammation of these cells can lead to a loss of integrity of the epithelium, causing an increase in permeability across the airway. Swelling of the airway with a corresponding reduction in airflow also can occur.

Sustained damage to this tissue also may lead to an inflammatory response in the epithelium, leading to obstruction of the airways in humans with exacerbation of pre-existing respiratory diseases such as asthma.

The study findings suggest that Corexit exposure caused oxidative stress to epithelium cells, leading to a breakdown in their ability to function as a barrier. The exposure also increased the frequency of apoptosis, or programmed cell death.

“The evidence that Corexit causes structural and functional abnormalities in airway tissue includes dispersant-induced cell detachment, edema, contraction in cell diameter and increased permeability,” Antony said.

The body’s natural reaction to airway injury is the production of HO-1, an anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic enzyme found in the epithelium, and increased production of an oxidant-generating enzyme, NADPH oxidase-4, or NOX4. NOX4 has protective properties in proper amounts; but if left unregulated, NOX4 can contribute to airway damage.

“Corexit exposure led to an increase in NOX4 activation, and there is evidence that the increase of NOX4 is tied to increased apoptosis,” Antony said. “On the other hand, HO-1 was also activated following Corexit exposure. We also noted that the introduction of HO-1 following injury served to remediate the effects of that injury.”

The research team studied zebrafish, housed in the Aquatic Animal Research Core at UAB, and blue crabs, obtained from Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratories, which were exposed to Corexit. The team also procured a cell line of human epithelium tissue cultures.

Antony and colleagues are applying for additional research funding from the Gulf of Mexico Research Institute to further this work. The laboratory of Anupam Agarwal, M.D., director of the UAB Division of Nephrology, is a leader in the field of HO-1. Victor Thannickal, M.D., director of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, is an expert in NOX4. R. Douglas Watson, Ph.D., and Stephen Watts, Ph.D., in the Department of Biology, are experts in aquatic and marine science, and Watts is co-director of the UAB Zebrafish Research Facility and is director of the NORC Aquatic Animal Research Core at UAB.

“In summary, our results indicate that respiratory epithelial surfaces across phylogenetic species are sensitive to injury by Corexit. However, the enzyme HO-1 protects against inflammation and cell death induced by Corexit,” Antony said. “Unfortunately, the likelihood of another oil spill is high, and the need to use dispersal agents will remain. We propose that upregulating HO-1 may offer a novel therapeutic approach for treating dispersant-induced injury and apoptosis by enhancing the antioxidant and anti-apoptotic ability of the epithelium.”

Funding for the study came from the UAB Environmental and Translational Medicine Program.
